HUMOUR
How has your BCom helped you in your career today?
My first job out of university was as a marketing
intern for L’Oreal Paris. I got it through the graduate
placement programme at the University. I then worked
in marketing for many years and I learnt skills in that
career that I still use today.
What is humour?
Humour is subjective and what is funny for one group
or individual may not be funny to another. The trick is to
find your voice, then your audience, and try to have as
broad an appeal as possible.
What should a wannabe comic study?
There is no specific field to study to become a comedian
but education is great to develop your thinking. I
certainly benefited from my BCom because I had a
better understanding of business, but I have friends like
Schalk (Bezuidenhout) who studied drama and is one of
the most successful comedians in the country.
What makes you laugh?
Everyday life. Things I can relate to.
How did you get 175 000 followers on Facebook,
and 90 000 on Instagram?
Love, hard work and lots of patience.
Memories from your student days?
Honestly, my time at university was tough. I was not
doing particularly well in my personal life and I failed
many times. I was fortunate to have parents who
did not give up on my education. I probably should
have studied another course, something I was more
interested in but then … that BCom made me the man
I am today and I am grateful.
Anything else you’d like to share with Thetha readers?
Study something you find interesting. A degree is a
wonderful gift but it does not guarantee success. It
does not mean you have to work in that field of study.
Work hard but keep an open mind and don’t be too
hard on yourself when things don’t happen exactly as
you planned. Take the lesson and adapt.
